Conservation Studio

Conservation Studio
For the first ten years of our existence, we cooperated with external experts in the field of conservation. Nowadays, we can mostly carry out the conservation of museum artefacts, including periodic conservation inspections, with our own resources. At the Studio, we also provide opinions and assess the state of conservation of our collections.

Since the beginning of the activities of the Collections Conservation Studio, the attention of the conservators employed at the museum has been focused on issues related to the conservation of its collections, taking into account their diversity. We take an individual approach to our collected items, with the overriding aim of properly preserving them. Conservation is carried out by both the Studio and by external bodies over which we exercise conservation supervision.

After over six years of the Studio’s operation, more than 1,000 museum objects have already been conserved, and over 20,000 more sent for disinfection after initial examination. All this is done so that the clean objects can be packaged and stored safely.

We have focused our conservation efforts primarily on the objects that will be included in the permanent exhibition opened in September 2023.

To date, we have conserved, among others, codices and manuscripts, clothing, part of the collection of practically used and decorative metal wares, and militaria. The Studio has preserved, for instance, an 18th-century men’s waistcoat and dresses from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also a collection of more than 40 metal confectionery moulds or a tear grenade used by the Motorised Reserves of the Citizens’ Militia (Polish acronym: ZOMO) during the suppression of demonstrations in the Polish People’s Republic.
